Scar Therapy

What Is Scar Therapy?

Scars are a natural part of the body's healing process following surgery, injury or tissue damage.

Although many scars heal without difficulty, some can remain sensitive, uncomfortable or associated with tightness and restricted movement in the surrounding tissues.

Scar therapy uses carefully adapted hands-on techniques to address these concerns once the area has healed sufficiently. Treatment focuses not only on the scar itself but also on the surrounding tissues, where tightness and restricted movement may develop following surgery or injury. Gentle mobilisation and soft tissue techniques may help reduce this tension, improve tissue mobility and ease associated discomfort.

At Marylebone House, I work with scars following a range of procedures, including Caesarean sections, abdominal surgery, knee and hip replacements, and other operations.

The aim is not to erase the scar, but to address symptoms that may be affecting your comfort and movement.

How Does It Work?

Your appointment begins with a consultation about your surgery or injury, healing history and any current symptoms.

I assess the scar and surrounding tissues, considering sensitivity, mobility and how the area may be affecting everyday activities.

Depending on your needs, treatment may include gentle scar mobilisation, soft tissue techniques, desensitisation approaches and appropriate movement exercises.

Treatment is adapted to the stage of healing. I will not work directly on wounds that have not fully healed or on areas showing signs of infection or other complications.

Who Is It For?

Scar therapy may be suitable for people with healed surgical or injury-related scars that remain uncomfortable, sensitive or restrictive.

Treatment can be considered for both relatively recent and older scars, depending on their condition and your medical history.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I start scar therapy after surgery?

Scar therapy can begin once the wound has healed sufficiently and treatment is medically appropriate. Timing varies depending on the procedure and your recovery. If you're unsure whether you're ready, please check with your healthcare provider or feel free to send me a message to discuss your circumstances.

Can scar therapy remove a scar?

No. Scar therapy cannot erase a scar. Its purpose is to address associated discomfort, sensitivity or movement restrictions where appropriate.
