Nutritional Advice

What Is Nutritional Advice?

There is no single diet that is right for everyone.

With so much conflicting and often misleading information about nutrition, deciding what to eat can be surprisingly difficult. Foods that suit one person may not be appropriate for another, depending on their health, lifestyle, age and individual circumstances.

At Marylebone House, my approach to nutrition is primarily informed by the dietary principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), alongside Western nutritional science and relevant medical knowledge.

This is not about counting calories, following fashionable diets or imposing unnecessary restrictions. It is about understanding what your body needs and helping it function as well as possible through appropriate nourishment.

Diet is sometimes overlooked when people are managing persistent symptoms or long-term health conditions. Yet our eating habits can influence many aspects of health, including energy, digestion, metabolic function and inflammatory processes.

In some circumstances, dietary factors may contribute to ongoing symptoms or make them more difficult to manage. Reviewing nutrition can therefore be a valuable part of a wider approach to care, even when the main concern is not digestive.

My aim is to help you understand your individual nutritional needs and make practical, sustainable changes that support your health and wellbeing.

How Does It Work?

Your nutritional assessment begins before we meet.

I ask you to complete a seven-day food diary and provide information about your medical history, current health conditions, medications, supplements and any relevant recent test results.

During the initial consultation, we explore your eating habits, symptoms, lifestyle, health concerns and personal goals.

Drawing primarily on TCM dietary principles, I consider your individual constitution, digestion, eating patterns and the relationship between your food choices and overall wellbeing. I also incorporate Western nutritional knowledge to assess dietary variety, nutritional adequacy and relevant health considerations.

Together, we develop personalised recommendations that are realistic for your lifestyle and suited to your individual circumstances.

Where appropriate, we may explore dietary strategies that support healthy inflammatory processes. Inflammation can contribute to pain in certain conditions, and nutrition may be one useful part of managing these concerns alongside other appropriate healthcare.

A follow-up consultation is part of the process. It allows us to review your response to the recommendations, discuss any challenges and adjust your plan where necessary.

Consultations are available in person at Marylebone House or online.

Who Is It For?

Nutritional advice is not only for people with digestive problems or chronic health conditions.

It may be useful if you want to improve your eating habits, understand which foods suit you, address nutritional concerns or simply feel more confident about your everyday food choices.

It may also be particularly relevant for people:

  • Experiencing digestive discomfort or changes in bowel habits

  • Living with persistent pain or inflammatory conditions

  • Managing long-term health concerns

  • Recovering from illness or surgery

  • Navigating changing nutritional needs during pregnancy, postnatal recovery or menopause

  • Looking to improve their overall diet and wellbeing

You do not need to have a diagnosed medical condition to benefit from personalised nutritional guidance.

Where a medical condition is present, nutritional advice is intended to complement appropriate medical treatment rather than replace it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is nutritional advice about losing weight or counting calories?

No. My approach focuses on the quality and suitability of your diet rather than calorie counting. The aim is to nourish your body appropriately, support its normal functions and identify dietary habits that may be affecting your health.

Is your approach based on TCM or Western nutrition?

My approach is primarily guided by Traditional Chinese Medicine dietary principles, supported by Western nutritional science and relevant medical knowledge. I consider your individual needs rather than applying the same dietary rules to everyone.

Can nutritional advice help with inflammation and pain?

Diet can influence inflammatory processes in the body, and certain dietary patterns may be helpful in managing some inflammatory conditions. Because inflammation can contribute to pain, nutrition may be an important consideration within a broader treatment approach. However, the role of diet varies between conditions and individuals.

Do I need to have a health condition to book?

Not at all. You may simply want to understand your nutritional needs better, improve your everyday eating habits or find reliable guidance among the many conflicting recommendations available.

Why do I need to complete a seven-day food diary?

A seven-day diary provides a more accurate picture of your usual eating patterns, food choices, meal timing and dietary variety. It helps me prepare for your consultation and identify areas worth exploring together.

Will I need a follow-up appointment?

Yes. A follow-up appointment is an important part of the nutritional advice process. It allows us to assess how the initial recommendations are working for you and make adjustments based on your experience and progress. The timing is agreed individually.

Can I have my consultation online?

Yes. Nutritional advice consultations are available online as well as in person at Marylebone House. The assessment and preparation requirements are the same for both options.
